In the matter of shedding dead bodies in Ganga, the UP government has not responded to the NGT i.e. National Green Tribunal even after 3 months. The Tribunal Court had sought a report from the government in the month of May in this matter of the Kovid period (from 2018 to 2022).

The NGT had asked the UP government that how many human bodies were seen floating in the Ganges river? How many were buried on the banks of the river? It had sought information before the onset of Covid in 2018-2019 and since the start of the pandemic in 2020-2021 till March 31.

In the 27 districts of the banks of the Ganges, more than 2 thousand dead bodies were found in the Ganges in a length of 1140 km. It was revealed in the ground report that the number of unloaded dead bodies was highest in Kanpur, Ballia, Unnao and Ghazipur. After this, the issue of getting dead bodies in the Ganges had heated up all over the country.

Government sought report from the body
The NGT had expressed displeasure over the non-receipt of the report. After this, the joint secretary in the government, Kalyan Banerjee, had called for a report from the civic director Neha Sharma. Neha Sharma had asked all the municipal commissioners to submit the report immediately. At the same time, there are 15 municipal corporations in the state, which did not report even after several instructions. They are placed in the defaulter category.

Information sought from Home and Health Department
A bench of Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member Dr. Afroz Ahmed asked the Home and Health Department of the UP government to submit a factual verification report on the subject. The tribunal tried to know whether any criminal case was registered. The NGT had also asked whether there was any violation of environmental rules. If so, the details of the precautionary measures taken may be furnished.

These 15 municipal corporations came in the defaulter category
Agra, Aligarh, Ayodhya, Bareilly, Firozabad, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Kanpur Nagar, Lucknow, Mathura, Meerut, Moradabad, Prayagraj, Saharanpur, Varanasi are in the defaulter category.
