Sri Lanka Kerosene Price Hike: In Sri Lanka, surrounded by economic crisis, there has been a big increase in the prices of kerosene. The price of one liter of kerosene oil has been increased by Rs 253. The new prices will be effective from midnight today. The old price of kerosene was Rs 87 per liter, which will now be Rs 340 per liter after the increase. In this way, the price of kerosene in Sri Lanka has been increased by about 290 percent. The prices of everyday items are already skyrocketing in the country.
According to media reports, Sri Lanka’s only oil refinery producing kerosene has remained closed due to lack of crude shipments. Due to which the stock of oil was running out. Because of this, the price of kerosene has been increased. However, this refinery has started production from Saturday 20 August. The ministry concerned had on Saturday announced that the refinery would run for at least 40 days as it had bought two consignments of Russian crude.
People have demonstrated against inflation
Significantly, in the midst of the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, people protesting against inflation took to the streets in the month of May. Protesters also occupied Sri Lanka’s Rashtrapati Bhavan, demanding the resignation of the then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. After which Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country.
President and Prime Minister had resigned
After this demonstration, the then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe resigned from their respective posts. After which a new government was formed in Sri Lanka. In the new government, Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected the new President of the country by the Parliament. This was the first time in the history of the last 44 years of Sri Lanka that the Parliament directly elected the President.
