West Ham have made a move to sign reported Arsenal and Newcastle United target Lucas Paqueta, hoping to seal a move for the Brazilian player before the transfer window closes on the last day of August. Arsenal had been linked with a move for the Lyon playmaker two weeks ago, and Newcastle have since emerged as potential candidates for the 23-year-old.
Sensationally, today David Moyes admitted the club’s interest in the player in an interview: “There’s been a lot of talk about him – but I can tell you yeah we have made a move. He’s 23 and has 30 Brazil caps. He can play as a 10, an eight or a false nine. I think his pedigree is really good.
“Pedigree doesn’t always guarantee anything but you’d hope it works towards getting better.”
The Rio De Janiero-born 24-year-old began his career playing for Flamengo, before making a move to Serie A side AC Milan in 2019. One season there followed, and a transfer to Lyon beckoned. Since the 2020 season, Paqueta has scored 18 goals in 67 games from midfield, an impressive record for the Ligue 1 outfit.
It is understood that Arsenal decided against a move after director of football Edu had discussions with manager Mikel Arteta.
Newcastle United are also on the verge of a deal to sign Alexander Isak, leaving West Ham free to swoop for the talented Brazilian international.
