China-US Tension: China’s Navy is closely monitoring two American warships that passed through the Taiwan Strait separating Taiwan from China’s mainland on Sunday. US warships passed through the Taiwan Strait, where Chinese military exercises took place for several days in August, often crossing the line separating China and Taiwan and claiming it. The Eastern Theater Command (ETC) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) said on Sunday, “Two American missile-guided cruisers—USS Antietam and USS Chancellorville—passed through the Taiwan Strait on August 28 and publicly campaigned.”

ETC spokesman Senior Col. Xi Yi said ETC kept track of and monitored American ships all the way through the strait and that all movements of the two US warships were under control. He said the troops of the Eastern Theater Command of the PLA are always on alert and ready to neutralize any provocation.
Criticizing the movement of US naval ships, China’s state-run Global Times wrote, “The US is trying to appease Taiwanese officials and regional allies. He is sending them the message that Washington will not back down because of military pressure from mainland China.
Tensions rising after Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan
US warships have passed for the first time since Pelosi’s voyage through the busy and strategically important Taiwan Strait separating China and Taiwan. According to official media information, since 2012 till now, about 100 US warships have passed through this strait to challenge China’s claim.
The US conducts similar navigation and aerial exploration in opposition to China’s claim in the disputed South China Sea. China claims most of the territory, while the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan oppose China’s claim.
