Maharashtra Crime: The news of the death of a journalist in Rajapur in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra is very much discussed, many questions are being raised regarding this incident. Many media organizations have expressed objection to the increasing attacks on media personnel and journalists. Please tell that journalist Shashikant Varishe was crushed by a car along with his two wheeler on Monday (February 6). Due to which he died during treatment in a hospital in Kolhapur. Journalist Warishe is survived by his elderly mother, wife and a 19-year-old son. Varishe worked for a local Marathi newspaper and was covering a rebellion by the people of Barsu over issues related to the setting up of the Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (RRPCL). It is alleged that due to this he was crushed by the car.

Varishe was standing with his two wheeler near a petrol pump near Rajapur Highway in Ratnagiri district on Monday. Then suddenly an SUV vehicle crushed them at high speed and dragged them for several meters. Police said that by the time people around came to help them, the accused had fled from there. People saw Varishe lying unconscious on the road and admitted him to the local hospital for treatment. Where he died on Tuesday. Ratnagiri Superintendent of Police Dhananjay Kulkarni said that the culprit has been identified as Pandharinath Ambarkar, against whom an FIR was already registered. He further said that soon after the incident, the accused was arrested and he was produced in the court. Where the court has sent him to police custody till 14 February.
Journalist Warishe had named Ambarkar in an article in the Metropolitan Times magazine a few days back, alleging that he was a criminal. Ambarkar is alleged to be a supporter of the refinery and an FIR is said to have been lodged against him for threatening the local people opposing the refinery.
Demand for investigation of death
Kiran Naik of Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Patrakar Parishad met Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and demanded an inquiry into his death. On the other hand, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said that the death was not accidental but a clear foul play and an attack by a land broker. I will write a letter to the Prime Minister and demand a discussion on the refinery.
