The Government of India has extended a helping hand after the huge damage caused by the earthquake in Turkey. 51 NDRF personnel have left for Turkey in Air Force’s special aircraft C-17 Globemaster. The C-17 Globemaster took off from the Hindon airbase in Ghaziabad at 3 am on Tuesday. India has also sent medical equipments and medicines. The second aircraft is on standby, which may leave shortly.

NDRF spokesperson Naresh Chauhan told that 51 jawans have been sent in the first batch. They are being led by Deputy Commandant Deepak Talwar. For the first time, 5 women jawans are participating in the international level rescue operation. Apart from this, two dog squads have also been sent, which will prove to be helpful in finding people buried under the debris in Turkey.

At the same time, the Airforce tweeted and wrote- ‘Last night, an IAF C-17 took off for Turkey. The aircraft is part of a larger relief effort, which will be carried out by the IAF in collaboration with other Indian organisations.

  • When there was flood in Bihar 8 years ago, this aircraft reached Bihar with a team of doctors from Delhi. This plane was given the form of a hospital.
  • In October 2020, when there was tension between India and China, the Indian Air Force had sent this aircraft to the border of China with logistics material for its soldiers.
  • In case of disaster in Kathmandu, Uttarakhand, Himachal, Bihar etc., help was provided by sending this aircraft of the Indian Air Force.
  • In 2013, the US had airlifted 670 people in one go from this aircraft due to the storm in the Philippines.

Easy landing in difficult places
The Boeing C-17 Globemaster is one of the largest cargo planes in the world. Globemaster can easily land in difficult places like Kargil, Ladakh and other northern, eastern borders. In case of trouble in landing, reverse gear has also been provided in it. The aircraft is equipped with four engines. The exterior structure of the C-17 aircraft is so strong that it is not affected by rifle and small arms firing.

  • Length – 174 feet, width – 170 feet, height – 55 feet.
  • Can take more people at a time than an international flight.
  • The power to airlift 3 helicopters or two trucks.

Ghaziabad’s NDRF battalion handles four states
The National Disaster Management Authority was formed on 26 December 2005 on the basis of the Aapda Mochan Sankat Act. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was formed on the basis of its plans, policies and guidelines. NDRF was raised in the year 2006 with eight battalions. At present it has a total of 12 battalions. The 8th Battalion is in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh. The states of Delhi, Haryana, Uttarakhand are affiliated to this battalion. Two districts of UP are also connected.
