Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the prequel spinoff series by producer Shonda Rhimes, has opened big on Netflix. Premiering on May 4, the newest Bridgerton series had 148.28 million hours of viewing worldwide in the four day, as per Netflix’s internal measurement, for the week of May 1-7. It reached the top 10 in 91 countries and was ranked number one in 76 of those countries.

According to a report on The Hollywood Reporter, Queen Charlotte had the fourth best opening week for any series on Netflix this year, after the second season of Ginny & Georgia with 180.47 million hours and The Night Agent with 168.17 million and the third season three of Outer Banks with 154.97 million hours. The prequel series has fewer episodes compared to the three shows which all have 10-episode seasons. Additionally at six hours and 49 minutes, it is shorter than the others, which run for at least eight hours.

The second season of Bridgerton, which premiered in March 2022, had brought in 193 million viewing hours in its first week. The streaming platform did not track its shows weekly in 2020, so there is no data for the first season of Bridgerton. However, both seasons of Bridgerton feature in Netflix’s top 10 English-language shows of all time for viewing in their first 28 days of release. The new series could break into the all-time top 10 with its current viewing pattern.

Written and created by Shonda, the series stars newcomers India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest and revolves around the romance between King George III and Queen Charlotte after their marriage. Series regulars from Bridgerton also stars in the prequel, including Golda Rosheuvel as the older Queen Charlotte, Adjoa Andoh as the older Lady Agatha Danbury, Ruth Gemmell as Lady Violet Bridgerton and Hugh Sachs as the older Brimsley. Arsema Thomas, Michelle Fairley, Sam Clemmett and Freddie Dennis are also part of the show.

The Hindustan Times review of the show stated, “While the costumes and production design in Queen Charlotte, like Bridgerton, are top-notch, the casting department deserves a round of kudos for choosing such seamless actors for the younger and older versions of characters like Agatha and George. Newcomers Amarteifio and Mylchreest carry the show quite well as the chemistry between the two is very palpable. The rest of cast from Thomas to Rosheuvel are also standouts. The latter in particular shows how she is grown into the role of queen over time. Gemmell also gets an interesting development, which might be explored in further Bridgerton seasons. While we wait for season three, this has been a most wonderful sojourn.”
