The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking mandatory registration of live-in relationships. He also reprimanded the petitioner. This petition was filed in the Supreme Court after the Shraddha Walkar murder case of Delhi came to the fore. On Monday, the matter reached the bench of CJI DY Chandrachud.

During the hearing, the CJI said- ‘What is all this, people bring anything here. We will start imposing penalty on such cases. The petition was filed by a woman named Mamta Rani.

The CJI asked the petitioner- ‘Registration with whom, with the Central Government, what does the Central Government have to do with people living in live-in relationships. Asking two questions, the CJI said, ‘Are you trying to promote the security of these people or to stop live-in. We dismiss this silly petition.

Petition was started to stop the increasing crime in live-in relationship
Mamta Rani had filed this petition in view of incidents happening during live-in relationships. The petitioner said that the court had earlier also considered such relations within the purview of fundamental rights. The central government should register those living in live-in, so that their records are available with the police.

This series started with the story of Aftab Poonawalla and Shraddha Walkar. The police had unearthed the murder in Delhi in November last year. After which many such reports had come to the fore that the partner living in the live-in killed the lover/girlfriend and cut her into pieces or disposed of the dead body.
