The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a PIL seeking setting up of a commission to rename all historical places named after invaders. The court said that with this those issues will be alive, which will boil in the country. It is a fact that a foreign power invaded the country and ruled it for years. We can’t wish that part of our history away.

You want to keep alive the issue of brutality of Muslim invaders. History cannot be selectively erased. Hinduism is a way of life, not just a religion. The petition was filed by advocate Ashwini Upadhyay in early February. On which the bench of Justices KM Joseph and BV Nagaratna heard.

History should not trouble the present generation
The court told advocate Ashwini Upadhyay that you are making today’s generation a prisoner of the past. You are pointing fingers at a particular community. Our country is secular and Hinduism is a way of life which is adopted by all and there is no bigotry in it. The history of the country should not disturb its present and future generations.

Retaining these names is against civil rights
Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, in this petition, sought to set up a committee to change the names of historical, cultural and religious places named after foreign invaders. The PIL states that a few days ago the name of Mughal Gardens was changed to Amrit Udyan. Retaining these names is against the civil rights under the constitution.
