Pakistan: Imran Khan’s warning to the Sharif government- fix the date of general elections after talks


Pakistan Politics: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has warned the Shehbaz Sharif government that if the dates for the general elections are not announced after sitting face-to-face through talks, the assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces will be dissolved. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party chief Imran Khan announced last week that its leaders would resign from provincial assemblies.

Khan said, “On consideration I have decided that either they negotiate with us and decide the date of elections or if we dissolve the assemblies in let’s say about 66 per cent of Pakistan’s territory – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab There will be elections.

Governor’s rule imposed

Imran Khan’s party PTI is in power in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Gilgit-Baltistan province. At the same time, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led federal government has warned of imposing ‘Governor’s’ rule in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

Rana Sanaullah welcomed

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Home Minister Rana Sanaullah has welcomed Imran Khan’s offer for talks. He said, “When politicians sit down to do something, issues get resolved.” Imran Khan was removed from the post of prime minister in April this year after a no-confidence motion was passed in the National Assembly. Imran is demanding fresh general elections in Pakistan.

The federal government, headed by Prime Minister Sharif, is opposing the demand for immediate elections. The term of the current National Assembly of Pakistan will end in August 2023.
