Ex Indian Navy Personnel in Qatari Custody: The Indian Embassy in Qatar is making continuous efforts to rescue eight former Navy personnel who were detained by the Government of Qatar. To give impetus to these efforts, Delhi had sent a senior officer to Doha. According to the Indian Express report, the officer had traveled to Doha in late October.

Eight former Navy personnel have completed 71 days in the custody of the Qatari government on Tuesday (November 8). With this, appeals to the Prime Minister and the cabinet to make rapid efforts to rescue the soldiers have increased on social media. The Government of India is in talks with the Government of Qatar for the last 10 days but till now no solution has been found in the matter. Last week there were indications that a second consular access had been approved. The first consular visit was held last month. There was hope that the soldiers would be released in a few days but still it is being awaited.

What were the former Navy personnel doing in Qatar?

According to the information, the detained former Indian Navy jawan used to work in Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services. The company was providing training to the Qatari Emirati Navy and other services such as military equipment and equipment maintenance. Qatar’s intelligence agency SSB took him into custody on 30 August. The Indian Embassy in Doha came to know about their arrests in mid-September.

In late September, former Navy personnel were allowed to talk to their families over the phone. On October 3, he was given diplomatic access so that an official from the embassy could meet him. The second consular visit was approved for the first week of November. No information has been received so far about the allegations leveled against the former Indian Navy personnel. According to reports, all eight people have been kept in solitary confinement, which is an unusual punishment. This is usually done in crimes related to security.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs of India, the Embassy of India in Doha is doing everything possible for the release of eight former Navy personnel. The ministry has said that after getting consular access, the government has taken the condition of those people, but till now it is not known on what charges they were detained.

Purnendu Tiwari, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, is also among the eight people taken into custody. Purnendu has been a Commander in the Indian Navy. His family living in Gwalior informed the media that after retiring from the post of Navy Commander, Purnendu started a job in a company that trains the Qatar Navy. Along with him, seven more ex-servicemen started work. His phone calls had stopped coming since August. After contacting the company, it was found that he has been taken into custody.
