North Korea Fires Missile: North Korea has fired ballistic missiles towards Japan for the seventh time in two weeks. After this missile test of North Korea, an emergency alert has been issued by the Prime Minister’s Office of Japan. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Pyongyang fired two missiles early on Sunday from the southeastern coastal city of Munchan. The first at approximately 1:47 local time (16:47 GMT) and the second approximately six minutes later.
The Japanese government said North Korea had fired ballistic missiles. Japan’s Minister of State for Defense Toshiro Ino told reporters that the two missiles reached an altitude of 100 km (60 mi) and covered a range of 350 km (217 mi). He said both fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone and officials were looking into what type of missiles were launched, which is likely to be submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
South Korea condemns North Korea
South Korea’s military condemned the launches as “serious provocations” that undermined peace, noting that they were “clear violations” of UN Security Council resolutions. The US Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement that it was discussing the situation with its allies and partners and highlighted the “destabilizing impact” of North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. At the same time, America’s commitment to the defense of South Korea and Japan remains “troubled”.

North Korea has tested an unprecedented number of weapons this year, including its largest-ever intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stepped up efforts to modernize and expand the country’s military capabilities. Sunday’s launch also coincided with the 77th anniversary of the founding of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party, a major event for Pyongyang.

On Saturday, North Korea’s defense ministry said its recent missile tests were a “correct response” to military exercises by its adversaries. “Our missile tests are a general, planned self-defense measure to protect our nation’s security and regional peace from direct US military threats,” state media KCNA quoted an aviation administration spokesman as saying.
North Korea has argued that it was forced to pursue a nuclear weapons program in response to America’s “hostility” and necessary for self-defense. However, US and South Korean officials have repeatedly said that they have no intention of attacking North Korea.
