Nepali Congress alliance on the path of victory, now waiting for the results


Nepal Election 2022: Nepal’s ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba’s party Nepali Congress (NC) is heading towards a clear majority in the parliamentary elections. This alliance of five parties has won 67 seats out of the results of 124 seats declared so far on Friday. Out of a total of 275 members of the Federal Parliament, 165 will be elected through direct voting, while the remaining 110 will be elected through a proportional election system.

A party or coalition needs 138 seats to get a clear majority. The Nepali Congress alone has so far won 42 seats under the direct voting system and has emerged as the single largest party. At the same time, its alliance partners Communist Party of Nepal (CPN)-Maoist Center have won 12 seats, CPN-Unified Socialist 10, Democratic Socialist two and Rashtriya Janamorcha one seat. All these parties are part of the ruling coalition.

The main opposition CPN-UML (Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist)-led alliance led by former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has so far won 38 seats. CPN-UML has won 30 seats, its allies Rashtriya Prajatantra Party and Janata Samajwadi Party have won five and three seats respectively. The newly formed Rashtriya Swatantra Party has won seven seats. Nagrik Unmukti Party has won two and Jan Morcha and Nepal Mazdoor Kisan Party have won one seat each. Independents and others have won five seats.

Voting was held on Sunday for 275 seats in the federal parliament and 550 seats in seven provincial assemblies in Nepal. The counting of votes started on Monday.

Of the total 275 members of the Federal Parliament, 165 will be selected through direct voting, while the remaining 110 will be selected through a ‘proportional election system’. Similarly, out of a total of 550 members of the Provincial Legislative Assemblies, 330 will be elected by direct vote, while 220 will be elected by the proportional system.
