Julie and Romeo of NDRF 8th Battalion Ghaziabad have given new life to two girls in Turkey. Both these girls were buried under a multi-storied building in the earthquake in Turkey. She remained buried under the debris for several days. As luck would have it, NDRF’s sniffer dogs Julie and Romeo came to the rescue by becoming gods.

Both the sniffer dogs gave the signal that these girls were alive. What was it then, NDRF jawans got involved in the rescue and took out both the girls alive. NDRF India has so far retrieved 61 dead bodies and carried out two live rescues.

In Turkey, bodies are buried under multiple-storey debris, which NDRF teams are continuously extracting.

NDRF spokesperson Naresh Chauhan said, “Our teams are conducting rescue operations at a total of 29 sites in Turkey. Three teams pulled 28 bodies from the rubble on Monday in Noordag and Hayte in Gaziantep. Two live rescues have been done so far. There are two girls in it, whose age is 6 and 8 years. Facing various challenges in adverse conditions, NDRF teams are carrying out their search and rescue operations in Turkey.

Handler told how sniffer dogs give indication
Julie’s handler constable Kundan Kumar said, ‘A big building had collapsed in the earthquake. We were conducting rescue operation on the debris of this building. We drop Julie off at the wreckage. Julie started barking at one point. This was a sign that someone was trapped alive there. We released another dog, Romeo, for confirmation. Romeo also went to the same point and gave a signal like Julie. We gave this information to the senior officer and then after that our entire team got involved in removing the debris at the same point. A 6-year-old girl was buried below, whose name was Beren.

NDRF jawans told that about 9 days have passed since the earthquake.  In such a situation, slowly the dead bodies have started rotting.

Julie-Romeo’s first international operation
Romeo’s handler is constable Abhay Kumar. They tell that Julie and Romeo became part of the NDRF together. They are together on most operations and do their job well. Saving each and every life in Turkey is most important to us. Even when there was a bridge collapse in Kolkata, Julie-Romeo went together and their operation there was successful. But this is Julie-Romeo’s first operation at the international level.

NDRF teams have gone from Ghaziabad, Varanasi and Kolkata
Jawans of three battalions of NDRF India have gone to Turkey. It has Ghaziabad, Varanasi and Kolkata battalions. About 150 jawans and six sniffer dogs of all the three battalions are doing rescue there day and night. NDRF India has been given the responsibility of rescue at the major epicenter of the earthquake. These teams are doing rescue by coordinating with the local teams.
