Minor was raped after befriending her on Instagram, court sentenced her to life imprisonment


Karnataka Crime: Karnataka’s Udupi Additional District and Sessions Court and Fast Track POCSO Court have sentenced a youth to rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a minor girl. The young man had befriended the girl through social media Instagram. The complaint of this incident was made three years ago in Karkala Rural Police Station area and the decision has been pronounced on 7th February. In which the convict has been sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment.

Police filed charge sheet
According to the charge sheet filed by the police, the accused had come to the house of the minor girl on February 12, 2020 when no one was in the house. He had sexually abused the girl by alluring her with words. After that the girl was raped. The victim’s mother came to know about the incident when the girl student refused to attend class on 27 September 2020 and told her mother about the sexual harassment.

The accused has been identified as 26-year-old Radhakrishna, a resident of Venur in Belthangady taluk. Who had befriended the girl in 2019 through Instagram. Judge Srinivas Suvarna sentenced accused Radhakrishna to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for offenses under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC and Section 6 of the POCSO Act. Apart from this, the court sentenced the accused to imprisonment for offenses under Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and Section 8 of the POCSO Act. Also, a fine of Rs 10,000 has been imposed on him. The judge said that all the sentences will run concurrently.

The victim’s mother lodged a complaint with the police
After this, the victim’s mother lodged a police complaint against the accused. The then Police Inspector Mahesh Prasad arrested the accused Radhakrishna and filed a charge sheet for offenses punishable under the provisions of IPC and POCSO Act. At the same time, Special Public Prosecutor Y T Raghavendra presented 18 witnesses before the court. A case has also been registered against the accused under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
