United stall over De Gea extension

Manchester United have reportedly stalled over extending David de Gea‘s contract amid their ever increasing wage bill.

The Spaniard has entered the final year of his £350,000-a-week contract, but the club have the option for another 12 months.

It was previously anticipated that they would trigger the clause, but the situation has now changed due to their hefty wage bill.

According to The Mirror, the club are currently not looking into renewing the stay of De Gea, and he could move on next summer.

De Gea could only stay if he accepts a significant pay-cut. Else, the Spaniard could end his decade-long association with the club.

Leeds United’s Illan Meslier and Everton‘s Jordan Pickford have been identified as potential replacements for De Gea.

The former is the Red Devils’ main target, but their fierce rivalry with Leeds could hamper their prospects of securing his services.

De Gea continues to remain United’s undisputed goalkeeper despite the uncertainty involving his future beyond this season.
