Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yacoub dissolves parliament, elections will be held soon


Malaysia Elections: Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that he was dissolving parliament on Monday, paving the way for early general elections. The general election is likely to be held in early November. It has been dissolved 9 months before the expiry of the term of the Parliament.

Ismail’s United Malay National Organization (UMNO) called for early elections. The UMNO, the largest constituent of the ruling coalition, is at loggerheads with its allies. The purpose of holding elections is to get a big victory on our own. The Election Commission may meet within a week to announce the date of polling.

What did Ismail Sabri Yakoon say?

Ismail Sabri Yakub while addressing the nation on Sunday, 9 October 2022 said that I had met the king and sought permission to dissolve the parliament and today the king has agreed to my request to dissolve the parliament. He further said that I hope that people will use their vote wisely for stability, economic development and harmony in the country.

Although elections were to be held in Malaysia next year in 2023, Ismail had to face pressure within his party United Malay National Organization (UMNO). After this he announced the dissolution of Parliament. In fact, it was PM Ismail’s party that had pressured him to dissolve Parliament and get a strong mandate.
