As per the guidance of the government, these payments are made only to meet the actual cost of performing public duties. Such allowances were arranged after the resignation of Margaret Thatcher in 1990.

Since the scheme’s inception, several prime ministers have claimed millions of pounds, citing office and secretarial costs as a result of their special position in public life. Truss will now join the six other surviving former prime ministers who are entitled to claim money through the scheme. This means taxpayers would have to pay more than £800,000 sterling per year.
