CJI DY Chandrachud is the 50th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

CJI DY Chandrachud completed his 100th day as the Chief Justice of India on Thursday. The CJI disposed of more than 14,000 cases in the Supreme Court during these three months. The registry work of the Supreme Court has also become completely paperless during his tenure.

The biggest thing about CJI Chandrachud’s tenure was that from 9 November 2022 to 15 February 2023, a total of 13,764 cases were filed in the Supreme Court. While in the meanwhile 14,209 cases were settled.

Initiatives taken during the tenure of CJI

  • Electronic-Supreme Court Reports (e-SCR) project, which made 34,000 judgments available online free of cost.
  • 3,132 judgments translated into Indian languages ​​Hindi 2952, Tamil 52, Malayalam 29, Telugu 28, Oriya 21, Kannada 17, Marathi 14, Assamese and Punjabi 4 each, Nepali, Gujarati and Urdu 3 -3, 1-1 in Garo and Khasi.
  • Launched Advocate Appearance Slip Portal eliminating the practice of manually filing appearances through Advocate-on-Record.
  • Continuation of video-conference hearings in hybrid mode and live-streaming of Constitution Bench cases.

foundation day celebrated for the first time
It was on the initiative of the CJI that the Supreme Court celebrated its foundation day for the first time since its establishment in 1950. In which Chief Justice of Singapore (CJS) Sundaresh Menon attended. Menon delivered the first lecture on the role of judiciary in the changing world.

Recently, a delegation of 23 US State Court Judges also visited the Supreme Court and met the CJI.

Justice Chandrachud has been the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court
Justice Chandrachud took over as a Supreme Court judge on 13 May 2016. Before coming to the Supreme Court, he had been the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. At the same time, he has also worked as a judge in the Bombay High Court. Before being appointed as a judge, he had been the Additional Solicitor General of the country. Sabarimala, Bhima Koregaon, Homosexuality, Aadhaar and Ayodhya have been judges in the case.

Justice Chandrachud’s father was the 16th CJI.
Justice Chandrachud’s father Yashwant Vishnu Chandrachud was the 16th CJI of the country. His tenure lasted from February 22, 1978 to July 11, 1985 i.e. for about 7 years. Will sit on the same post 37 years after his father’s retirement. Justice Chandrachud has also overturned two major decisions of his father in the SC. He is known for his bold decisions.
