Moonlighting In IT Companies Update: Recently, Wipro has fired 300 employees for doing moonlighting. Infosys has also informed that it has taken action against the employees doing moonlighting in 12 months. But IT companies are now seen divided regarding this action. N Ganapathy Subramaniam, COO of the country’s largest IT company TCS, has said that action against an employee over moonlighting can ruin his career and it is extremely important to show empathy while dealing with the issue.

N Ganapathi Subramaniam has said that no one can stop the company from taking action against the employees on Moonlighting. He said that the action is a part of the service agreement but this action against the young employees has to be stopped. He said that due to action, the career of the employee would be over. This way the employee will fail the background test for the next job in future. So we have to show some sympathy. He said the company treats an employee as part of the family and will focus on preventing the family member from wandering off considering the consequences of any action.

In fact, in recent times, the talk of moonlighting in the IT sector is constantly coming to the fore. When an employee works for an organization other than his regular job, it is technically called moonlighting. Many companies like TCS have expressed concern about this while Wipro has also suspended 300 employees. Companies like Tech Mahindra have taken a soft stance on moonlighting.

The COO of TCS said that some IT companies work on such a model where it is okay for employees to do freelancing. But companies like TCS cannot allow activities like moonlighting to continue as there is a question of customer data which should be protected. Infosys has also warned its employees about moonlighting i.e. working in two places simultaneously. Infosys has sent an email to employees on September 12 with the title ‘No Double Lives’. The company said in the email that if found working simultaneously at two places, disciplinary action will be taken against the employee as well as loss of job.
