Iran’s government bows down to protesters, will change decades-old law regarding hijab


Islamic Hijab Law: Violent protests against the hijab are still going on in the Islamic country of Iran. The government is engaged in using force to suppress the voice of the protesters. According to media reports, Iran’s police have arrested and jailed a large number of protesters. However, even after this the anger of the people is not reducing. Iran’s government has hinted at reviewing a decades-old law mandating the hijab amid violent protests for nearly two months. Under this law, women in Iran have to cover their heads. Under this law, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested. Mehsa died in police custody on 16 September. According to reports, he was tortured a lot in police custody.

Hijab law will change!

The news agency AFP quoted Iran’s Attorney General Mohammad Jafar Montajeri as saying that the government of Iran has now decided to change the decades-old law related to the compulsory hijab. He said that both the Parliament and the Judiciary are working on this issue. Both will see if there is a need for any change in the law. At the same time ISNA news agency said that they did not clarify what amendments can be made to the law by both the bodies (parliament and judiciary).

Iran’s Attorney General said that results will be seen in a week or two. He told that on Wednesday (November 30) the review team has met the Cultural Commission of the Parliament. On the other hand, President Ibrahim Raisi has also indicated to amend the law. President Ibrahim Raisi said on a TV channel that Iran’s republican and Islamic foundations are constitutionally strong, but the methods of implementing the constitution well can be flexible, they will be used.

Hijab was not compulsory before 1983

Let us tell you that there was a time when women in Iran lived in an atmosphere of openness like in western countries, but everything changed after the Islamic revolution in 1979. The Islamic Revolution overthrew the US-backed monarchy and Ayatollah Khomeini assumed the throne. Ayatollah first implemented Sharia law. Hijab became mandatory for all women in Iran in April 1983. Now it is mandatory for every woman above 9 years of age to wear hijab in the country. Tourists also have to follow this rule.
