IMEI Registration: Mobile phone manufacturers and importers will be required to register the IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity) of their smartphones. The IMEI number of all mobile handsets sold in India will have to be registered on its counterfeit device prevention portal. The Telecom Department has given this information through a gazette notification on September 26.

Notification issued on 26 September
The government has said in a notification issued in this regard on September 26 that this notification has been issued under the Prevention of Tampering with Mobile Equipment Identification Number (Amendment) Rules, 2022. The portal on which it will have to be registered is operational from the year 2020. This registration process will have to be completed before January 1, 2023, after which action can be taken.

Why did the government take this big step
The Central Government has launched the Central Equipment Identity Register project under which lost or stolen phones can be blocked. The government has also taken this step to prevent the misuse of such handsets. The government is aware of the misuse of mobile phones in various security issues and that is why this big step has been taken.

What is IMEI number
For your information, let us tell you that each mobile phone has a unique 15 number International Mobile Equipment Identity Number ie IMEI number which works as the unique ID of that device. You can also know the IMEI number of your mobile phone yourself and apart from this you can also see it on the box of the mobile phone.
