How much loss in education of school children due to corona lockdown in Chhattisgarh? released report


Chhattisgarh School Education: Educational recovery is happening fast after Corona in Chhattisgarh. The school education department claimed the condition of Chhattisgarh to be better in the country. Also releasing the report said that despite the lockdown, the figure of learning math skills in Chhattisgarh has been 10.6 percent. At the same time, at the national level, this increase is only 1.8 percent. For this, the Minister has released the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) – 2022 on behalf of the School Education Department.

School Education Department released the impact report

The School Education Department of the Government of Chhattisgarh has claimed that due to Corona there was a lot of loss in the learning level of children in many states. Compared to 2021 in Chhattisgarh, in 2022, the situation before Corona has started coming back. School Education Minister Dr. Premsai Singh Tekam has released the Annual Status of Education Report on Saturday.

He has told that 64 thousand 131 children in the age group of 3 to 16 were surveyed by reaching 33 thousand 330 houses in 1679 villages in 28 districts of Chhattisgarh. In rural areas, information about enrollment of children in pre-primary school and school was collected. Children aged 5-16 were tested for comprehension skills in reading, maths and English.

Learning loss of children due to lockdown

The first survey ASER Chhattisgarh – 2021 was conducted in October-November. When the schools were reopened after being closed for several months due to Corona. In this report, important estimates have been given on the learning loss due to the closure of schools. The second survey ASER Chhattisgarh – 2022 was conducted in November 2022 to understand the status of school education and basic competence of children after almost a year of catch-up activities. The evidence can help to understand how successful learning recovery has been so far and what kind of support will be needed going forward.

Based on the report of Asar, in terms of improvement in the learning level of children after Corona, Chhattisgarh has made good progress in many indicators as compared to other states. Chhattisgarh ranks seventh in the country in terms of enrollment of children in government schools. The average enrollment in government schools is 72.9 per cent at the national level, while that of Chhattisgarh is 81.6 per cent.

Number of children taking private tuition

Apart from this, Chhattisgarh ranks fifth in the country in terms of enrollment share of private school children. The average national level of enrollment in private schools is 25.1 per cent, while that of Chhattisgarh is 16.4 per cent. This means that a large number of children in the state study in government schools. In Chhattisgarh, the tendency of parents to send their children to private tuition by giving money is very less and the state ranks second in terms of private tuition. The figure of children going to private tuition in Chhattisgarh is 5.2 percent, while at the national level this figure is 30.5 percent.

According to the 2022 report, Chhattisgarh ranks 14th in terms of loss in learning of reading skills of children in class III. The corona lockdown resulted in a loss of 4.3 percent in grade 3 reading skills, compared to a 4.6 percent loss at the national level. Chhattisgarh ranks 12th in terms of learning impairment in mathematical skills of Class III children. The state did not show any difference in the learning of math skills in class 3 due to the corona lockdown, while at the national level this loss is 0.7 percent.

Chhattisgarh ranks 10th in terms of learning impairment in children’s reading skills in class V. There was a loss of 4.4 per cent in learning due to the Corona lockdown, while at the national level this loss is 5.7 per cent. Chhattisgarh ranks 13th in terms of learning loss in mathematical skills of children in class V. There was a loss of 3.3 per cent in learning due to the lockdown, while at the national level this loss is 4.4 per cent.

4.1% increase in children’s reading skills in 6th grade

Chhattisgarh ranks 6th in the level of learning of children’s reading skills in class VIII. Despite the Corona lockdown, learning increased by 4.1 percent, while at the national level this loss is 2.8 percent. It ranks second in terms of level of learning of children in math skills in class VIII. Despite the Corona lockdown, there has been an increase of 10.6 per cent in learning, whereas at the national level this increase is only 1.8 per cent.

After the impact report, School Education Minister Dr. Premsai Singh Tekam has instructed the officials to take follow up action. He also said that the way mothers have been connected in Chhattisgarh through ‘Education Program in Angana’. Taking this program forward in the state this summer season, work will be done to raise its level further by taking the responsibility of teaching and learning community-wise.
