‘Itna weight kar ra hai, darayega kya’ were the words that Sonu used to hear from his friends in school every day. Then no one knew that this overweight and oversized Sonu would become the identity of Chandigarh. Sonu has won the bronze medal in the Under-23 National Wrestling Championship. Greco-Roman’s heavyweight category won this medal in 130 kg. Once friends used to make fun of him because of weight, today we are proud of the same Sonu. He is a trainee at Manimajra Coaching Center and coached by Darshan Lal.

Sonu while talking to Bhaskar said that friends in school used to make fun of my fatpa. I used to hear such things everyday, but never allowed myself to feel bad about these things. Keeping these things in mind, started wrestling in 2015. My father loves sports and uncle does wrestling.

Starting with Under-100
Sonu said that I was overweight from the beginning and never thought of losing weight after listening to people’s words. Thought that one has to eat well and work hard. That’s why I started learning wrestling. I started with the under-100 category and after that I played in the 110kg category. Now my weight is 124 kg, so I am wrestling in 130 kg category. In this category my target is to win medals in Asian Championship and World Championship.

Ligament broken but not encouraged
Injuries happen in every wrestler’s career and Sonu’s career is no different. He said that I had a ligament break during the national in 2018. I was unable to walk. I had to stay away from Matt for a year and in 2019 I made a comeback. After a few months of training, I won a medal for the country in Asian Cadet Wrestling. During this, watched the video of favorite wrestler Raza (Turkey). He has been motivating me every step of the way. They are my role models.

Day starts at 4 in the morning
Sonu’s day starts at 4 in the morning and he first eats amla or banana. After this they do training and take bead water or glucose in between. After practice, he drinks 250 grams of almond water, then eats oatmeal for breakfast and drinks milk.

After this rest and then at 12 o’clock they have lunch with roti, vegetables, curd and salad. Bead water or glucose again during exercise in the evening and then almond water or protein after exercise. In dinner, again take roti-sabzi, salad and then sleep till 10 o’clock. The day starts again at 4 in the morning.
