This letter to the Ministry of Health was written on 27 March by Prakash Kumar Singh, director of the Serum Institute of India. Last month, the COVID-19 working group, headed by Dr NK Arora, had also recommended to the health ministry that Covax be included as a heterologous booster dose on the Covin portal. The recommendation said that it can be given to adults who have taken two doses of Covishield or Covaxin.
WHO has also got approval
On January 16, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) approved market authorization for giving Covax to people who have taken two doses of Covishield or Covaxin. At the same time, Covax has also received approval from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA).
DGCI had approved giving Kovax to adults in emergency on 28 December 2021 with certain conditions. Similarly, on March 9, 2022, it was approved to be given to people aged 12 to 17 years. At the same time, on June 28, 2022, approval was given by DGCI to give it to children in the age group of 7 to 11 years in the same form.
Covax is being prepared through technology transfer
Covavax is manufactured through technology transfer from US vaccine manufacturer Novavax. It has also received approval from the European Medicines Agency for market authorization with conditions. The WHO added Covax to the list on 17 December 2021 approving it for emergency-use.
Let us tell you that Novavax Inc. In August 2020, announced a license agreement with the Serum Institute of India for the development and commercialization of its NVX-CoV2373 vaccine. The vaccine was to be launched in India and low or middle income countries.
