In 2023, the music industry witnessed the disbandment of several prominent music bands, leaving fans heartbroken and nostalgic for the era they represented. From Brave Girls to Anti-Flag, these bands had captivated audiences with their unique sound, powerful performances, and memorable hits, but unfortunately, internal conflicts, creative differences, or personal reasons led to their untimely demise.
Sum 41
Members of the band Sum 41 announced that they’re breaking up after 27 years together, saying they are “excited for what the future will bring for each of us.” In a statement posted to Twitter in March, the punk rock band said, “We are forever grateful to our fans both old and new, who have supported us in every way.” The band, which consists of frontman Deryck Whibley, lead guitarist Dave Baksh, bassist Jason McCaslin, guitarist Tom Thacker and drummer Frank Zummo, said they will continue their upcoming tour dates and release their final album, Heaven :x: Hell. They will also launch a final worldwide headlining tour to celebrate the release.
Brave Girls
One of the longest-running K-pop groups that disbanded this year is Brave Girls, which debuted in 2011. The group had a roller coaster ride and got its big break in 2021 when it started to garner attention for its track, Rollin’, which released in 2017. However, to surprise of everyone, the group called it quits on February 16, 2023, after their contract with their agency met the deadline. Before Brave Girls officially wrapped up their career, they released a significant last track, Goodbye, which was released on the same day as their disbandment.
Panic! At the Disco
Panic! At the Disco, a popular band, announced that they will be going their separate ways after completing their shows in Europe and the UK in February and March. The band’s frontman, Brendon Urie, made the announcement on social media in January. Urie also shared that he will soon be becoming a father and that he wants to put his focus and energy on his family. In his statement, Urie reflected on the end of this chapter of his life and the beginning of a new one. “Sometimes a journey must end for a new one to begin,” he wrote. “I look forward to this next adventure.” he band, which formed in 2004, includes members Brendon Urie, Ryan Ross, Brent Wilson, and Spencer Smith. The band’s last performance is on March 10, 2023 in Manchester, England.
D1CE
The first boy band K-pop groups that disbanded this year is D1CE. Not too long ago, on August 1, 2019, the five-piece K-pop group debuted under D1CE Entertainment with their debut track, Wake Up: Roll the World. While many were excited and happy about the debut and were looking forward to more tracks coming their way, fans were rather shocked to hear about the disbandment news on January 20. This happened after their contract with the agency managing them expired.
Anti-Flag
On July 19, Anti-Flag suddenly fell off the face of the earth. Fans were met with a message on the band’s Patreon page stating that Anti-Flag had split up. The band’s website and social media pages disappeared. A week later, the group’s singer, Justin Sane posted a lengthy message to Instagram acknowledged that he has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman. He denied it and said, “I have never engaged in a sexual relationship that was not consensual, nor have I ever been approached by a woman after a sexual encounter and been told I had in any way acted without her consent or violated her in any way.”
Blackpink
While there may not be a confirmation, rumours are that the biggest K-pop girl group is heading for disbandment. It has come to the end of their seven-year contract with their label, a time when many bands split up. The agency who manages them have also commented and said that, “Nothing has been decided on Blackpink’s contract renewal and future activities. We are in discussion with the members.” Rumours have also been circulating that while Rosé is renewing her contract, Jisoo, Jennie and Lisa joining new companies
