WB Scam: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday raided various places in Hooghly district in search of assets of arrested and now expelled Trinamool Congress leader Shantanu Banerjee as part of its probe into the alleged ‘cash for school jobs’ scam in West Bengal. An ED official said that the ED probe team was divided into at least six parts and they raided the alleged properties of Shantanu Banerjee in Balagarh, Bandel, Chinsurah and other areas in West Bengal’s Hooghly district since Saturday morning. .

ED had to break two flat locks

The official said that at present nothing much has been found inside these assets of Shantanu Banerjee. We had to break the locks of two flats in Bandel and Chinsurah. The lock of the main gate of a guest house registered in the name of the accused was also broken. He said that the ED did not find anything important which would be helpful in taking the investigation to the next level. The search operation is still going on. It may take a few more hours to complete. The ED has already frozen 15 bank accounts of Shantanu Banerjee, from where transactions worth several crores were detected by ED officials.

TMC had expelled only after arrest

Currently Shantanu Banerjee is in the custody of the Central Investigation Agency. He was expelled by the ruling Trinamool Congress soon after he was arrested by the ED. The Enforcement Directorate is probing alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teachers and non-teaching staff in government and aided schools and has arrested several people for their alleged involvement. On Monday, Shantanu Banerjee was sent to ED custody for 11 days. Now he will be produced in the court on 24 March.
