Earthquake in Southeast Taiwan: South-East Taiwan has once again suffered a heavy earthquake. The intensity of this earthquake has been measured at 6.6 on the Richter Scale. An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 was reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) near the city of Taitung in southwest Taiwan. The epicenter of the earthquake was said to be 27 km from Taitung City. The loss of life and property is being assessed.

The USGS said the quake struck about 50 kilometers (30 mi) north of the coastal city of Taitung just after 9:30 p.m. (1330 GMT). Local media initially reported no casualties or damage from the quake. Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau put the magnitude at 6.4.

Earthquake tremors coming in Taiwan

Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes because the island is located near the junction of two tectonic plates. The island does not issue a tsunami warning unless the earthquake is stronger than 7.0. Some earthquakes of 6.0 or greater can prove fatal, although much depends on where and at what depth the quake occurred, but the USGS estimated casualties on Saturday was low, though said there was some damage. was possible.
