Delhi Mayor Election: Heavy police force present in MCD hall, BJP leaders raise slogans of Jai Shri Ram

Due to apprehension of ruckus in the elections, security forces have been deployed at the civic center of the MCD headquarters.

The process of elections for the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Standing Committee members of Delhi has started at Civic Center of MCD. First of all, 10 nominated members were sworn in. AAP leaders protested and raised slogans. On the other hand, BJP leaders also raised slogans of Jai Shri Ram and Bharat Mata Ki Jai.

AAP has fielded Shelly Oberoi and BJP has fielded Rekha Gupta for the post of mayor. In such a situation, it is certain that the capital will get a woman mayor. The first meeting of the House after the MCD elections was held on 6 January, but the election of the mayor could not be held due to the uproar. Today again the same situation seems to be happening.

Nominated councilors and members are taking oath as per the DMC Act, 1957 (amended in 2022). Actually, the elections for the post of Mayor in Delhi are held on the basis of rotation on the terms of 5 single years. The first year is reserved for women. The second year is reserved for the open category, the third year for the reserved category and the remaining two years are again reserved for the open category. In this way Delhi will get a woman mayor this year.

AAP has majority
AAP’s candidate for Deputy Mayor is Aale Mohammad Iqbal. Ale Mohammad is the son of Shoaib Iqbal, MLA from Matia Mahal. 273 members will vote in the Mayor’s election. A figure of 133 is needed for a majority. AAP has 134 councillors. Apart from this, there are also 3 Rajya Sabha MPs. In this election, 250 councilors along with 10 MPs (7 Lok Sabha MPs and 3 Rajya Sabha MPs), 13 assembly members will vote.

History of MCD
MCD came into existence in April, 1958. It started its journey from the historic 1860s Town Hall in Old Delhi and was shifted to the Civic Center complex in April 2010. Freedom fighter Aruna Asaf Ali was elected mayor in 1958. Ali’s photos still hang in the rooms of the old municipal building at the Town Hall and in the offices of the Civic Center. A major street in the city was also named after him.

Aruna Asaf Ali passed away in 1996. After this he was awarded India’s highest honor ‘Bharat Ratna’.

MCD split in 2012
Law scholar Rajni Abbi was the mayor of the MCD before its trifurcation in 2011. In 2012 the corporation was bifurcated into three separate civic bodies – North (104 wards), South (104 wards) and East (64 wards) Municipal Corporations. Each of these had its own mayor. The integration of all three took place last year when the Center brought a law to unify them. This reduced the total number of wards from 272 to 250.

Sweeping in MCD elections
After integration, the civic elections were held on 4 December and the counting of votes took place on 7 December. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the election by winning 134 wards and defeating the BJP, which was ruling the MCD for 15 years. In this election, the BJP won 104 wards, while the Congress could win only nine seats.

Former North Delhi mayor and senior BJP leader Jai Prakash said it is a matter of fortune for the people of Delhi that now again there will be a mayor for the entire city. He said that Aruna Asaf Ali was the first mayor of Delhi, and Rajni Abbi was the last until the MCD was divided into three parts in 2012, and that after 10 years there will be a woman mayor again, it is a matter of fortune for the city.

BJP’s Rajni Abbi won the election in 2011
In April 2011, the then BJP candidate Rajni Abbi was elected Mayor of Delhi by defeating Savita Sharma of Congress by 88 votes. Abbi was then a professor of law at the University of Delhi and currently serves as the dean of the university.

2012 mayoral election
After the trifurcation, mayor elections were held for all the three corporations – NDMC, SDMC and EDMC – in 2012. In April 2012, Meera Agarwal of the BJP was elected unopposed as mayor of the MDMC, while her party colleague Azad Singh became the deputy mayor. In May 2012, Annapurna Mishra was unanimously elected mayor of East Delhi, while her party colleague Usha Shastri was made deputy mayor. BJP’s Savita Gupta was elected as the first mayor of South Delhi, while BSP’s Bir Singh became the deputy mayor.
