Dalit woman committed suicide by hanging due to pressure to convert to Islam in live-in relationship


UP Crime: A Dalit woman living in a live-in relationship for two years committed suicide on Friday in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. The police have identified her as Anuradha Kumari. She was in a relationship with a man named Anwar Khan.

Police said that Anwar was arrested on Saturday evening following a complaint by the woman’s brother Aditya. The accused is a property dealer and works to sell cars. The brother of the deceased has alleged that Anwar used to force his sister to convert. He said that when Anuradha started denying this, Anwar forced her to commit suicide.

Case registered on the complaint of the brother of the deceased

Moradabad Civil Lines Deputy SP Dr. Anoop Singh said that Anuradha was working as a receptionist in Anwar’s office. Gradually both of them became close and they became friends. He was living in a rented house in the Civil Lines area for the last two years. SP Singh told that according to his brother’s complaint, Anwar wanted to legalize his third marriage. That’s why the accused was torturing her physically and mentally to convert to Islam.

Police said that Anwar has five children with his two wives, who live in separate apartments in Moradabad. The police came to know about the incident when Anwar’s second wife Iram informed the police about Anuradha on Thursday. He told that Anwar left Anuradha at her house on Wednesday night. He said that he was unwell and would soon return from a doctor’s visit. However, when he did not return and when Iram realized that Anuradha was dead, she called the police and informed them.

Deputy SP is investigating the matter

Deputy SP Dr. Anoop Singh said that a case has been registered against Anwar under the SC/ST Act and section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He said that he had taken the body for postmortem on 16 February. It was found in the postmortem that he died due to suffocation. He has informed the victim’s family members about this. Along with this, Singh told that the police is still investigating the matter.
