Mumbai Coronavirus Cases: More than 50 per cent of the current Covid cases in the city are being treated in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of private hospitals. The recent increase in cases has been mainly among senior citizens. Interestingly, many of those people had come for other treatment, then later their corona report came positive in the RT-PCR test.
How is the current situation?
According to BMC’s Covid dashboard, 32 patients are in ICU, of which 17 are in private hospitals while 15 are in government or Kasturba hospitals. The condition of five patients is critical and are on ventilator support, while 40 patients need oxygen support.
ICU patients likely to increase
A health department official said that the number of ICU patients is likely to increase as there has been a huge jump in daily COVID cases across the city. BMC Executive Health Officer Dr Mangla Gomre said, “We are seeing a further increase in the numbers as the cases are increasing.” Currently, all accidental hospitalizations are being linked to COVID. No one has been admitted to ICU for Covid. Most of the patients are senior citizens, but there are some who are below 40 years of age.”

On the other hand, civic-run hospitals are seeing more patients requiring ICU beds. Officer on Special Duty Maharudra Kumbhar said (SevenHills Hospital), “We have 13 patients admitted in the ICU, most of whom are senior citizens and suffering from more than one disease. Many of them have been transferred from private hospitals after testing positive for COVID.
An expert in infectious diseases said, Infectious disease experts of private hospitals say that where mostly senior citizens are being admitted to Kovid ICU. At the same time, they are also seeing patients below 40 years of age.
