Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi held a meeting with leaders of Delhi and Punjab on Monday. The meeting discussed whether the Congress should support Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party against the Centre’s ordinance.

The party leaders are divided into two groups regarding their support to Kejriwal. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal had said last week that if the central government brings a bill regarding the ordinance in the monsoon session of the Rajya Sabha, our MPs will oppose it.

After this statement of Venugopal, Congress leaders of Delhi and Punjab had a meeting on 23 May. Pratap Singh Bajwa, Ajay Maken, Sandeep Dixit and other Congress leaders were included in this. In this, the leaders of both the states refused to support Kejriwal and his ministers citing the case registered against them in the liquor policy case.

Delhi leaders are not in favor of support
According to party sources, the meeting was attended by party in-charge from Delhi Shakti Singh Gohil, Ajay Maken, Arvinder Lovely, Haroon Yusuf, Chaudhary Anil Kumar and others. These leaders unanimously refused any kind of alliance or support from Kejriwal.

These leaders have also refused to support AAP against the Centre’s ordinance regarding transfer and posting of Delhi officials. However, the leaders left the decision to the high command.

At the same time, Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja said – all the leaders have left the final decision on the party high command. Navjot Sidhu said that the central government is trampling on the constitution. Attempts are being made to destroy constitutional values. Only the party president and Rahul Gandhi will tell what happened in the meeting.

Kejriwal seeks support of opposition parties against ordinance
On May 20, the central government issued an ordinance regarding transfer-posting of officers in Delhi. Kejriwal is opposing it. He has sought support from the opposition parties including the Congress on this. Nitish Kumar had also met Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge regarding this.

Kharge and Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal have already spoken of supporting Kejriwal while opposing this ordinance.

Kejriwal had said on May 21 that if the central government brings a bill in the Rajya Sabha to make this ordinance a law, then the opposition should support us. If the opposition is together, the BJP will be finished in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Kejriwal has so far met 3 chief ministers to oppose the ordinance. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar himself met him on 21 May and supported him. On 23 May, Kejriwal went to Kolkata and sought support from Mamata Banerjee.

He met Uddhav Thackeray in Mumbai on 24 May and Sharad Pawar on 25 May in Mumbai itself. After this, on May 28, he met Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao and sought his support. This process of meeting the leaders of the opposition will continue in the future as well.
