Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) will now earn from horticulture waste of the city. To process this waste, the corporation has set up a plant at 3BRD. It will be operational by the middle of next month. Large branches of trees can be cut into small pieces with the help of shredder in the plant. Moisture will be removed from it. After this they will be given a shape. It will be sold as fuel in furnaces. The corporation will install a special tractor-trolley to lift the horticulture waste in the city.
Let us tell you that during the autumn season, horticulture waste piles up in the ‘Green City’ Chandigarh. Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) will now be able to process this waste better. According to the information, 8 tonnes of horticulture waste is collected daily in Chandigarh. At the same time, in the autumn and spring, about 20 tons of horticulture waste gets scattered in the city. The new plant has the capacity to process 30 tonnes of such waste daily.

At present, the MC picks up the horticulture waste (leaves, sticks, branches) of trees and plants in the parks and houses of the city and dumps them in the Daddumajra dumping ground. Some of it is used for making manure and the rest is thrown away.

Chandigarh MC says that the machinery to be installed in the plant has arrived and the work of the shed is going on. The plant is expected to be operational by mid-November. Horticulture waste from across the city will be processed here. This processing plant has been built adjacent to the existing Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in 3BRD. The project has cost Rs 3.5 crore which includes boundary wall and shed. This plant will be run by the MC himself, while the workers here will be hired through contract.
