Case against Karnataka Congress leader for forcibly confining son-in-law in mental hospital


Karnataka News: The Karnataka Police has registered an FIR against a Congress leader and his family members for kidnapping, trying to prove his son-in-law insane and forcibly keeping him in a mental asylum. The police gave this information on Monday. An FIR was lodged at the Puttanahalli police station in Bengaluru against Congress leader Divya Prabha from Dakshina Kannada district and five other family members.

The complaint has been filed by Naveen M. Gowda, son-in-law of Divya Prabha, who is a resident of Bellare near Sullia in Dakshina Kannada district. Naveen has named his wife Spandana, his family members Parasuram, Sparshita, Mahadev Gowda and doctors of a private hospital as accused. According to the police, Naveen married Spandana in 2019. By 2022, there were differences between the two and both the families got tired of resolving the differences on several occasions. Naveen claimed that he distanced himself from his wife after discovering obscene chats on her mobile.

The complainant alleged that the accused persons barged into his house on December 19, 2022, tied his hands and legs and took him away in an ambulance. They allegedly admitted him to a private hospital in JP Nagar and projected him as a mentally unsound person in connivance with doctors. They kept him in illegal custody and forced him to undergo treatment for mental illness. When Naveen resisted these efforts, the accused assaulted him at the hospital and said that he was ready to undergo treatment.

The complainant also claimed that the accused forced him to put his signature. On refusing, the accused got fake documents made and forged signatures. In this connection, a Habeas Corpus petition was filed in the High Court and Naveen was discharged from the hospital on December 22, 2022. Naveen had requested to initiate action against the accused, which has been taken up by the police.
