Britain: This time no one can stop Rishi Sunak from becoming PM! This is what the numbers of MPs tell

Rishi Sunak Vs Boris Johnson: Indian-origin British MP Rishi Sunak has once again joined the race for Britain’s PM. Former UK Finance Minister Sunak announced his candidacy for the post of PM on Sunday (23 October) through a Twitter post. It is being claimed in the reports that this time 128 MPs of the Conservative Party are supporting Sunak, which is much more than the minimum figure of 100 to become the PM.

If reports are to be believed, then this time no one can stop Sunak from sitting on the PM’s chair. However, supporters of former PM Boris Johnson have also claimed sufficient numbers. At present, the candidature of Johnson is yet to be announced. The funny thing is that after the resignation of Liz Truss, in view of the sudden change in political developments, Johnson returned after interrupting his holidays and had a long meeting with Sunak for the post of PM.

When will the next British PM be decided?

According to the information given on the UK Parliament website, nominations will close on Monday (24 October). Nominations can be sent by email or submitted directly. If there is more than one candidate with the support of 100 MPs, then the entire process of voting will be completed by October 28. At the same time, the next general election in Britain is to be held in 2024.

Sunak’s warning proved correct

Sunak is believed to be in a more serious contest this time than before as most of his warnings were dismissed by outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss as “a sense of hopelessness”. Sunak’s warning has proved to be true in the wake of the slowdown in the economy due to the decisions of the infamous ‘mini budget’.

Rishi Sunak, a former investment banker, a graduate of Oxford and Stanford University, was elected Member of Parliament from the Tory heartland of Richmond in Yorkshire in 2015 and quickly rose from junior minister to finance minister.

Sunak was so far behind Liz Truss

Last month, then British Foreign Minister Liz Truss replaced Boris Johnson as prime minister by defeating Rishi Sunak in a contest for the Conservative Party leadership. Then Truss got 57.4 percent and Sunak got 42.6 percent of the votes.

Such is Sunak’s family

Sunak has two daughters – Krishna and Anushka. Sunak’s wife Akshata Murthy is the daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayan Murthy and writer Sudha Murthy. Sunak’s father Yashveer is a retired doctor while his mother Usha Sunak is a pharmacist. When Rishi Sunak became an MP, he took oath in the name of Bhagavad Gita in the House of Commons.

What is Sunak’s stand on India?

During the nearly eight-week long election campaign for the post of Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak had said, “We know that UK-India relations are important. We represent the living bridge between our two countries.

Sunak had said that his approach to bilateral ties has gone beyond an opportunity for Britain to sell things in India and he wants Britain to “learn from India”. He had said, “I want to make sure that it is easy for our students to travel and learn in India, it is easy for our companies and Indian companies to work with each other because it is not just a one-sided relationship. It’s a two-way relationship and that’s the kind of change I want to bring in that relationship.”
