Rishi Sunak Vs Boris Johnson: Indian-origin British MP Rishi Sunak has once again joined the race for Britain’s PM. Former UK Finance Minister Sunak announced his candidacy for the post of PM on Sunday (23 October) through a Twitter post. It is being claimed in the reports that this time 128 MPs of the Conservative Party are supporting Sunak, which is much more than the minimum figure of 100 to become the PM.
If reports are to be believed, then this time no one can stop Sunak from sitting on the PM’s chair. However, supporters of former PM Boris Johnson have also claimed sufficient numbers. At present, the candidature of Johnson is yet to be announced. The funny thing is that after the resignation of Liz Truss, in view of the sudden change in political developments, Johnson returned after interrupting his holidays and had a long meeting with Sunak for the post of PM.
When will the next British PM be decided?
According to the information given on the UK Parliament website, nominations will close on Monday (24 October). Nominations can be sent by email or submitted directly. If there is more than one candidate with the support of 100 MPs, then the entire process of voting will be completed by October 28. At the same time, the next general election in Britain is to be held in 2024.
