Army truck rammed into farmers’ dharna

Farmers stage a sit-in on the highway in front of the sugar mill in Phagwara, Punjab. On Friday, an army truck went uncontrolled due to a technical fault and entered the picket site. There is no report of any casualty in this accident. The farmers sitting on the dharna narrowly escaped. The farmers were rescued by trolleys parked outside and barricades put up by the police.

Had the police barricades and trolleys not been parked outside the protest site of the farmers on the spot, the army truck would have entered the protest site and crushed the farmers. The farmers have staged a sit-in at the chowk near the traffic police post on the highway in front of the sugar mill. The highway in the square is closed.

Vehicles coming from Ludhiana pass through the service lane built on the side of Sugar Mill at Chowk and again on the highway. According to eyewitnesses, at the square where the vehicles turn on the service lane, the army truck started turning, it was cut but its garden steering was locked.

Truck stopped after going with police barricades

After the steering was locked, the army truck turned straight towards the strike site. First the truck collided with a water cannon (water cannon vehicle) of Punjab Police parked near the site of the picket at Chowk. After this, it collided with the trolleys parked outside. Meanwhile, the speed of the truck came under control and the truck came to a halt after colliding with the barricades put up by the police at the picket site.

After the accident, the army subedar in the truck informed his mechanical wing and higher officials with immediate effect. After the information, army officers from Jalandhar Cantt reached the spot with the mechanics. After this, towed the truck and took it along. In this accident, the water cannon of Punjab Police has been damaged.
