Action On Fake Reviews: Crackdown on paid reviews of product-services on online sites

Action On Fake Reviews: E-Commerce Companies, Hotels, Travel Booking Platforms will now have to disclose the methods of giving star ratings to their products and services. Companies will have to tell whether the product or service for which the review has been given has been sought or paid for or purchased. The government has made a standard based on the suggestions of companies related to online shopping or services. This standard will come into effect from November 25, 2022.

According to the new BIS standard, online companies will have to verify the reviewer and upload his personal data. Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, said that the objective of this standard is to crack down on bias and fraudulent reviews. He said that at present it is self-regulatory but later it can be made mandatory. He said that virtual shopping is done on e-commerce, so it is not possible for the customer to see the product in person. Customers trust the reviews of those people who have already bought the products or services. Rohit Kumar Singh told that India is the first country in the world to adopt these standards. A committee of companies like Tata Sons, Amazon, Flickart, Zepto, Reliance, Google, Meta, Zomato and Swiggy, Blickint was formed after talking to which this standard has been made.

However, any company that follows these standards to prevent these false reviews can obtain a certificate from the Bureau of Indian Standards. In fact, while doing online shopping, many times after reading good reviews of a product or service, customers get tricked. Because due to good reviews, the rating of these products ranges from 4 to 5 stars. Those who give reviews, companies give rewards for giving better reviews. This initiative of the Bureau of Indian Standard will help in bringing transparency in the methods of review of any product or services in online shopping.
