Acid attack: A man threw acid on his live-in partner in Mumbai. The incident took place on Friday morning, when the woman got up to fill the water tank. Meanwhile, the accused came from outside and threw acid on the partner.
Police have arrested the accused. He has been identified as Mahesh Pujari. The accused is 62 years old while his live-in partner is 54 years old. Both live in a chawl near Kalbadevi.

Lokmanya Tilak Marg police told that the priest had a fight with his partner, after which he returned with acid and poured it on the woman. The acid-burnt woman was taken to a private hospital, from where the police control room was informed. Senior Police Inspector Jyoti Desai said, “Our team reached the spot and caught the accused within 15 minutes.”
According to officials, both had been living together for 25 years. Due to the drunken habit of the priest, there used to be frequent quarrels between the two.
Acid throwing cases in the country
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, in 2021, 102 incidents of acid throwing were registered in the country. This number was 150 in 2019 and 105 in 2020. According to the data, the maximum number of incidents of acid throwing were seen in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. About half the number of cases occurring every year in the country were registered from here.
Chargesheets were filed in 83 percent of acid attack cases, while 54 percent resulted in conviction. In 2020, the rate of charge sheet increased to 86 percent while the rate of conviction increased to 72 percent. In 2021, these rates were 89% (charge sheet) and 20% (conviction). In 2015, the Union Home Ministry, in an advisory sent to all the states, urged for speedy trial of acid attack cases.
